About company

As youngsters, we both grew up exploring the back country areas around Lake Waikaremoana, Tongariro National Park and the Coromandel Peninsula, and after years of guiding the Great Walks in the South Island of New Zealand, we decided it was time to come home and share this amazing back yard of ours with people in an authentic and personal way - by providing the most incredible guided hikes in New Zealand without the crowds! Since we started in 2003, we've learned what it takes (sometimes the hard way!) to run incredible hiking trips in off the beaten track locations by taking all the right ingredients and carefully combining them.

When it comes to taking an adventure tour, we believe that people will make or break your experience. That's why a Walking Legends hiking tour starts not just with your guides, but from the moment you pick up the phone to talk to us about your holiday. Everyone in our organisation is crazy about hiking, and leading hiking tours in New Zealand. We're pretty selective about who we choose to take on in our dedicated team, so you can rest assured that you'll be coming on a trip with people who's experience, dedication and expertise are second to none. We're proud of our team!

The details...

Walking Legends started with people who love adventure travel and hiking in New Zealand's wilderness. We know exactly what it's like to arrive in a new place. Hours spent with maps and brochures mean hours you've lost, as your precious holiday ticks by. We take pride in sorting out all those little details and uncertainties of a new adventure so you won't have to, and after ten years in the game we've turned it into a fine art. We travel to some isolated places on our trips, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise on a comfortable bed, fantastic food or amazing service - life is too short for that, so we make it our mission to make sure you take your hiking tour in style.

Client's Reviews

A little dissapointing
Written: Apr 27, 2019 | Event date: March 2019 | Source: tripadvisor.com
We did the 4 day Lake Waikaremoana Discovery tour based at the lodge. Our guide Hamish was enthusiastic and did his best. We were disappointed with the 4 hour drive there and back from Rotarua in a van that we felt was not quite up for the conditions and on really windy roads. My husband and I felt quite unwell on a long windy drive on unmade roads. If advised of this BEFORE booking , I don't think I would have done this trip. It is just a bit too remote for me. We also had a flat Tyre on the way and felt that the guide was a little under prepared for that situation. We had to really coax him to ring the head office once we were back in phone range and were so surprised that their response was that he should "sort it out himself". The lodge is VERY basic and our order for vegetarian meals was somehow missed for the first night.
However the visit to the Marae was really interesting and some of the scenery lovely.

Thanks for the feedback, and we're very sorry to hear that the trip did not quite meet your expectations.
Yes it is a windy road to Waikaremoana, which is one of the reasons that makes it so remote and keeps the area so untouched and special. We use late model Toyota Hiace minivans, which we feel are the best vehicles for the road and our small groups. Most people don't have a problem with the drive, but we do acknowledge that sometimes the road can be rougher than usual if it hasn't been graded for a while. In our suggested packing list we recommend taking motion sickness tablets for people who are prone to car-sickness.
When the guide called the office to discuss the flat tyre situation we told him we would think about the best plan to get the spare tyre fixed. He then called back with a plan to drive to the closest town (45 mins away) while the guests were at the marae visit the next morning. We were happy with this plan as it was the quickest way to get the tyre fixed, and could be done while the guests were busy. If this had not been possible then we would have thought of another plan to get the tyre fixed, and certainly had no intention of leaving the group with no spare tyre. I'm sorry this wasn't communicated to you clearly.
And yes the lodge is fairly basic, but we are clear in all our literature that it is a 2-star accommodation, and we feel this is a fair rating. Waikaremoana is a remote wilderness with limited facilities, our aim is to help our guests explore this amazing wilderness area in a safe and comfortable manner, but I'm afraid we can't shave off all the rough edges completely. In hindsight it does appear that this was not the trip for you.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the scenery and the cultural visit to the marae. The fascinating cultural history and remote wilderness are what make this area so unique, and we don't want to see it change too much!
3 Day Tongariro and Surrounds - Amazing!

A majestical experience!! From the get-go, the organisation was impeccable - Hilary in the office is very helpful. Our guides, Andrea, Dan and Kris were AMAZING. Lots of local knowledge and such passion for their jobs. Nothing was a problem, even when the weather gods weren't particularly nice - the team was able to cater for all of us with the variety and challenges of the walks planned. Food was FABULOUS and the accommodation (Chateau Tongariro) stunning! Would definitely go back and do more with these guys.Thank you!

We spent 12 amazing days walking through forests, climbing up mountains, and plunging into cold streams . The scenery was only surpassed by the amazing guides and wounderful other travelers we met along the way. Thank you especially to Andrea, Hamish, Brad and the other folks who made this a wonderful trip and a life time experience I will never forget!

Absolutely amazing experience

I did the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk with Kris and Dan. They were such excellent guides, with lots of knowledge of the area such as the plant life and the local maori legends. They’ll make sure you don’t miss any of the best look out points or swimming spots. I’m a slow walker but they’re super great about letting everyone go at their own pace and allowing for plenty of rest breaks, and they make sure no one gets left behind. The food was amazing and it was generally a great experience. I can’t praise them enough! Thanks Walking Legends!!
Flexible with geriatrics

Top marks to Walking Legends’ Hamish and Andrea who recently hosted us on their Coromandel package. They are professional, caring and very good company. Our group consisted 8 Australian geriatrics from a walking group plus the 3 greyhounds as we called them who always streaked off with Hamish. Walking Legends was most obligingly flexible in allowing us to split the group. While the 3 greyhounds tackled the 7-hour climb of the Pinnacles, the rest of us spent our best of 3 days in short walks around Coromandel with Andrea. Thanks guys. Loved it.

Walked the Waikaremoana Trail guided by Paula , Dan and Gil . They couldn’t have been more helpful , knowledgeable or capable . The meals were all impressive - and I am sure we were the envy of many fellow freedom walkers . We learnt about the wildlife , fauna as well as a few folklore tales and history lessons thrown in ! They were there to give support on the trail when needed and even a well appreciated cup of tea on a damp day ! Fires were lit - and wine was poured - all we had to do was relax after a challenging days walk ! Can definitely revommmend Walking Legends - there was even a barbie and the pop of a cork of a celebration drink at the end !
Outstanding Experience

Early in the new year my Family (3 teenage sons and my wife) and I joined Chris, Dann, and Gill for a 4 day trek around Lake Waikaremoana on NZ North Island. This was the first guided tour we have done as my youngest son was a little reluctant and we also needed some local expertise on the track.

The experience was first class.

The guides were very knowledgeable, were focused on our comfort, and adapted the trek to include local cultural experiences with the local Iwi Chief. Bonus was the perfect weather and meteor show at the top of the ridge on the last night of the trek. The logistics of coordinating all of the food, accommodation, and gear was faultless. The trek itself was amazing (even though it was peak season we did not feel it was busy), the Maori folk law stories from Dann were interesting and Chris's knowledge of the area (fauna and flora) was superb.

Will come again and do more when time allows. Thoroughly recommended. Thanks Guys.

Fantastic adventure!

Just completed the 3 day Tongariro northern circuit with this company. Amazing, informative, fun guides that kept you going on the uphills when the end just never seemed to be in sight. 2nd time with them would use them again.
