A lush coastal province on the country’s east coast that is buffeted by warm tropical winds and plenty of sunshine, you jet directly on to the airstrip at The Homestead at Phinda from Johannesburg. For four nights, explore the Phinda Private Game Reserve by open safari 4x4 and while canoeing down the wild Mzinene River. The Homestead has only four suites decorated with Zulu-inspired flair, as well as an interactive kitchen where you can get hands-on lessons with the chef in creating South African dishes with a twist.
For a totally different change of scene, you then fly to Cape Town and are driven to the beautiful Stellenbosch Valley – the heart of South Africa’s renowned and historical Winelands. Your abode is the Owner’s Lodge at Delaire Graff, an estate where the wines and mountain views are matched only by the service, art collection and cuisine.
After three days of utter viticultural delight, you head off to De Hoop Nature Reserve on the Western Cape coast; an untouched gem that is home to Morokuru Ocean House. Built with both laidback comfort and green solutions in mind, Ocean House is the perfect family getaway. Spend your days cycling around the reserve, walking among glittering rock pools and relaxing on the deck, a pair of binoculars close by to watch migrating dolphins or southern right whales…

With four bedrooms, a swimming pool and an exclusive-use gym – not to mention a team of dedicated staff to look after your every need – The Homestead is a true ‘home from home’ where you can set the pace and unwind in complete privacy. In the morning, be woken the dawn chorus of gently singing birds before setting off for a Big 5 game drive. Enjoy lunch on a cool verandah, watching the agile antics of vervet monkeys, before having a mid-afternoon snooze to the gentle thrum of cicadas in the bush. With seven different habitats within the reserve, there is much to see and do, including tracking endangered rhino and spending a spellbinding evening searching for elusive leopard.
On your third day, you will leave the bush behind to enjoy a half-day adventure on the beach. The Maputaland coast has long sandy beaches that meet the warm Indian Ocean, where you can swim or take a long walk or snorkel at Jesser Point, a protected marine reserve.
Days 5-7: Sublime views in wine country | 3 NightsUp arrowCape Winelands, South AfricaFrom the bliss of game to the delight of the grape. A short drive from Cape Town International Airport through rolling Winelands takes you to the gates of the magnificent Delaire Graff estate in Stellenbosch.
Considered one of the top wine estates in South Africa, Delaire Graff is beautiful mix of tranquil interiors, exceptional art by South African artists and astounding views. The spa prides itself on holistic treatments while the two on-site restaurants use locavore ingredients sourced from surrounding farmers to create menus that take their inspiration from the breadth of Africa all the way to Asia.
You can spend your days unwinding in the gorgeous gardens or undertake day trips to the surrounding Winelands: top-notch estates that date back hundreds of years can be found in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. On day six, you will be guided by an experienced wine lover through the many farms on offer; your itinerary will be tailor-made for you based on your wine preferences. The next day, explore the wider Cape Peninsula on a guided and tailored tour – you decide whether you would like to visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Point Nature Reserve, take a boat trip to Seal Island or have a gander at the endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach.
Days 8-12: Untouched beauty | 4 NightsUp arrowWhale Coast, South AfricaFrom the Winelands of Delaire Graff to the wild land of De Hoop Nature Reserve. Lying on the southern Cape coast of South Africa, De Hoop is a small but perfectly formed slice of pristine wilderness. Malaria-free, its green grazing rolls down to a shore that is aptly known as the ‘Whale Coast’ for the preponderance of southern right whales that come to breed and calve here.
Surrounded by nothing more than the beach and with uninterrupted views of the ocean, Morokuru Ocean House has five bedrooms, an organic kitchen, a private pool and a unique wood-burning hot tub positioned to make the most of the coral-tinged sunsets. Studded with original art, the villa has ocean views from every room and a specially designed 360-degree view living area.
In addition to hiking in the reserve, you and your family can tackle the mountain-biking trails, spend the day learning the secrets of rock pools from your guide or just relax at the pool with a book from the thoughtfully curated library.
After four idyllic days, it is time to head back home, both your camera and your memory filled with never-to-be-forgotten moments from your South African sojourn.
