In the Midst of the Mediterranean
This journey dives in to the best Sicily has to offer! We’ll explore the Necropolis of Pantalica and the ancient eastern side of the island. Then, our journey continues on to Noto and the nearby coast where we meet with local producers and enjoy some of the freshest ingredients imaginable. We then turn our radar north to Mount Etna—the highest summit of Sicily at about 11,000 ft. (and still active). Our journey finishes in beautiful coastal Taormina, offering breathtaking views across the sea. Throughout our sojourn we delve into a gastronomic paradise where fresh seafood, local vegetables and, of course, wine are the main stars.Trip designed by Travel Expert Christina Cain
Day by Day
Appreciate nature as we walk past peaceful oak trees and beautiful waterfalls in search of Necropolis tombs, cave dwellings and a former Byzantine village in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Necropolis of Pantalica. This evening, explore historic Modica, known for its incredible chocolate recipes (said to be one of Europe’s earliest).
Wander through the Cave d`Ispica, host to Byzantine rock churches, subterranean catacombs, and ruins dating back to Neolithic times. This evening, you may opt to dine at one of the Michelin star restaurants (the town boasts 3!) and enjoy some independent exploration in Ragusa.
Get an early morning start, heading east into the Noto countryside where we`ll be introduced to the famous Noto almond at a family-run farm. Here, we`ll watch an almond milk extraction and savour a sweet break with almonds, almond cookies and other delicacies related to this delicious fruit.
Catch a glimpse of the impressive floor mosaics (rediscovered only 30 years ago) at Villa Romana del Tellaro and take a walk through the Vendicari Nature Reserve. In the late afternoon, we'll head to the Planeta family wine eastate, where we'll stroll through the vineyards and visit its “invisible wine cellar” before a memorable wine tasting and an Italian evening of refreshments.
March through larch and pine woods en route to our final destination, the epic Mount Etna. We’ll climb up the craters of the eastern side of the volcano through its lunar landscape, taking in the stark contrast of black lava amongst the evergreen pine forest (aka. George Lucas’ inspiration for his planet “Mustafar” in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith).
Today, embark on a challenging yet rewarding climb up to Castelmola, offering spectacular views across the coast. Then, enjoy lunch seafront at our favorite local restaurant, with the option to spend the afternoon at the beach.
Based on your onward travelling plans, your transportation will be arranged to Catania airport.Show All Days VIEW MAP CLOSE
