Overview

Your adventure tour of Rio de Janeiro & Iguazu Falls is the ideal introduction to Brazil, taking you the scenic way around Rio and its mountains to visit Christ The Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain, before flying you to see the world's most beautiful waterfall at Iguazu. A quick visit to Argentina makes this a two country tour, with many cultural and natural highlights to introduce you to the wonders of Brazil.

Hiking Tours of Brazil

Our Hiking Tours of Brazil are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to hiking, although some mountains may include a little climbing that is still suitable for those without much experience. We can also arrange serious climbing trips. We can also mix them with other activities such as climbing, kayaking or tandem hang-gliding flights, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For our Hiking Tours of Brazil, you only need to bring your favourite hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing and equipment. Any parts where a little climbing is necessary will include ropes, helmets and safety harnesses. All hikes and climbs are undertaken with an experienced, qualified local guide, with activity insurance included.

Itinerary

Day 1 : First Views of Rio de Janeiro! Rio de Janeiro The adventure begins immediately on this tour of Rio de Janeiro & Iguazu Falls. After transferring to your hotel, you head out for your first hike to the top of Dois Irmaos, the mountains overlooking Ipanema Beach. The hike begins in the Vidigal Favela, a fascinating mix of scenery and the unique culture of Rio's poorest mountain-side neighbourhoods, before taking you up through vegetation to the rocky peak. The views over the neighbouring Rocinha Favela, Leblon and Ipanema Beaches, the lagoon and up to Cristo are stunning and a spectacular start to your time in Rio. You continue on to Sao Conrado for your tandem hang-gliding instruction flight from the top of Pedra Bonita to land on the beach below. Day 2 : Tijuca Peak Hike & Christ the Redeemer Rio de Janeiro After breakfast, you drive up to the cool air of the Floresta de Tijuca, where the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio from the top of the Corcovado mountain. The 360˚ city views are matched by those from the top of Tijuca Peak, the highest mountain in the forest. The summit is reached by a two-hour trail through the rainforest until you climb the peak. The city, Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the beaches ringing Rio are all visible on clear days. After returning for lunch, you can enjoy the afternoon on Copacabana or Ipanema Beach. The evening can include a trip to Lapa, to experience the live music in Rio's best samba clubs. Day 3 : Climbing Sugar Loaf Mountain Rio de Janeiro Today you make your own way to the top of another of iconic mountain in Rio. You head first to Praia Vermelha, the beach base of the cable car station that takes you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Instead of taking the easy way up, you circle Urca & Sugar Loaf rocks along a 2hr trail. The final section is the short climb of 25m/80ft up the granite and can be done by beginners of reasonable fitness. Enjoying the views from Sugar Loaf having just climbed it is the most satisfying way to visit one of Rio's postcard places. A trail lunch with monkeys wanting to share it with you is the perfect end to your day, and you have plenty of time in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the beaches. Day 4 : Pedra da Gavea Hike & Climb Rio de Janeiro A short drive around to Barra de Tijuca takes you under the shadow of Pedra da Gavea, the largest coastal monolith on earth. The trail takes you up through the forest for 2-3hrs before you come out under the Emperor, the iconic rock-face of Gavea! A climb of around 40m with safety equipment and the expert eye of your guide to help if necessary, and another half hour of trail take you to the top of the mountain, with a sheer drop to the Atlantic Ocean and views along to Ipanema Beach and all the way down Barra da Tijuca Beach. The same trail takes you back down to the city below and you return to your hotel. Alternative trails, climbing routes and kayak trips are all possible too. Day 5 : Iguazu Falls Views Rio de Janeiro to Iguazu Falls The morning flight takes you to Iguazu Falls, and your first chance to see the 275 separate falls of the Rio Iguazu comes as you land. On arrival you will be met for an immediate tour of the Brazil National Park, where you can enjoy the majestic panoramic views of Iguazu from across the gorge. Options include viewing the falls from above with helicopter rides above them. In the late afternoon you transfer to your hotel on the Argentina side of the river with the evening free. Please be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for Iguazu Falls, as walkways, paths and yourselves become wet from the spray. Camera protection is also a good idea. Day 6 : Mesmeric Iguazu Iguazu Falls After breakfast you cross to the Argentinean national park, where walkways allow you to experience the majesty of Iguazu from very close quarters. The undoubted highlight is the mesmeric experience of looking down into The Devil's Throat as the falling water pounds the bottom, creating the roar and mist that mean Iguazu Falls can be seen and heard for miles around. The afternoon finishes with the adventure boat ride which takes you right under the falling curtains of water. In the evening you may like to take in the Rafain Latin American Dance Show with Dinner, or in the period around Full Moon, you can visit the falls to view Iguazu By Moonlight.
