Overview

This adventurous tour of Rio and the Costa Verde takes you up Rio's mountains, hiking, climbing and hang-gliding from them. As you move down the spectacular Costa Verde route, there are more trails to remote beaches and island peaks, with stunning scenery and unbeatable views. The views at sea-level around the rugged coastline are also special, as you discover when exploring them by sea-kayak on turquoise waters with sea-turtles for company.

Hiking Tours of Brazil

Our Hiking Tours of Brazil are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to hiking, although some mountains may include a little climbing that is still suitable for those without much experience. We can also arrange serious climbing trips. We can also mix them with other activities such as climbing, kayaking or tandem hang-gliding flights, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For our Hiking Tours of Brazil, you only need to bring your favourite hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing and equipment. Any parts where a little climbing is necessary will include ropes, helmets and safety harnesses. All hikes and climbs are undertaken with an experienced, qualified local guide, with activity insurance included.

Itinerary

Day 1 : The Marvellous City from Sugar Loaf Rio de Janeiro On arrival in Rio de Janeiro, your Brazil Adventure Tours guide describes the Marvellous City during the journey to your hotel. After time to check in and eat lunch, the action begins at Praia Vermelha, the base of the cable car station. Instead of taking the easy way up, you circle Sugar Loaf Mountain along a 2hr trail. The final section is the short climb of 25m up the granite, and can be done by beginners of reasonable fitness. Enjoying the sunset views from Sugar Loaf having just climbed it is the most satisfying way to visit one of Rio\'s postcard places. After enjoying the views, you descend by cable car and transfer to your hotel for the evening. Day 2 : Flying High Over Rio Rio de Janeiro One of the most spectacular activities in Rio or any other city is to hang-glide from Pedra Bonita Mountain to land on the beach. Your tandem flight is in the safe hands of our professional instructors, who give you a safety briefing including take-off and landing practice. No prior experience is necessary, just a little courage! The 15min flight soars between the mountains, over the urban forest and circles above Atlantic waves before landing on the sands of Sao Conrado. The whole experience lasts around 2 hours depending on wind and weather conditions. You transfer back to your hotel afterwards with the rest of the day free. Day 3 : Tijuca Peak Hike & Christ the Redeemer Rio de Janeiro After breakfast, you head to the cool air of the Floresta de Tijuca, the largest urban forest in the world covering the granite mountains around which Rio is built. A forest trail takes you to the highest point in the park, the 1,022m Tijuca Peak. The 360˚ city views are matched by those from Corcovado, where the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio, Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the beaches ringing the city. After returning for lunch, you can enjoy the afternoon on Copacabana or Ipanema Beach. The evening can include a trip to Lapa, to experience the live music in Rio\'s best samba clubs. Day 4 : Down The Costa Verde to Paraty Rio de Janeiro to Paraty In the morning, you journey down the Costa Verde, Brazil\'s Emerald Coast, and possibly its most spectacular coastal route. After leaving Rio behind, the 3-4hr drive takes you on the coast-hugging road, with jungle-covered mountains towering up to your right, and tropical islands dotting the sparkling blue Bay of Angra dos Reis to your left. After checking in to your Paraty hotel, you can spend a little time exploring the historic centre of the old port town before you take to the waters of the bay on a SUP (Stand Up Paddle) board. The shallow waters and offshore islands make it the perfect place to start. Day 5 : Jungle Trails & Hidden Beaches Paraty Today takes you up and over the hills of the remote Laranjeiras Peninsula to the start of the trail to Praia do Sono. A reasonably straightforward path over the headland through Atlantic Rainforest has you dropping down to the beautiful Praia do Sono. The beach and the fishing village there can only be reached by trail or boat. A stop for swimming in the crystal waters comes before you cross the next headland to the tropical paradise beaches of Antigos and Antiguinhos. After returning to Sono for a simple seafood lunch, you can either hike back or catch a ride with a local fisherman back to Laranjeiras and the transport to Paraty for the evening. Day 6 : Ocean Kayaking in Paraty Bay Paraty A few hours offshore paddling around the bay close to Paraty is a pleasurable way to spend your morning. An early start is necessary before the sun gets too hot, with sunblock and sunhat essential companions. The paddle around the coast, past headlands and empty beaches is a tranquil one. Depending on the tide, you may also have the chance to paddle through the mangroves. You return to dry land before lunch, which can be enjoyed close by on Praia Jabaquara, before you cross back over the hill to the historic town once more. The afternoon is free to either enjoy the beaches or a wander around the town once more. Day 7 : Escape to Ilha Grande Paraty to Ilha Grande After breakfast you transfer an hour to Angra dos Reis where the morning boat takes you to the largest island in the bay, Ilha Grande. On arrival at Vila do Abraao, the main village of the island, you will be helped with your luggage as there are no vehicles on the island, so journeys on foot along the beaches are necessary. After checking in, the afternoon is free to enjoy the beach, swing in a hammock under the trees, or perhaps walk or kayak to the beaches at Praia Crena or Abraaozinho. In the shallows of Crena or Praia Canto, the end of the main beach, you can often find sea turtles feeding, and snorkelling with them is an island treat. Day 8 : Praia Lopes Mendes Trail Ilha Grande The Classic Ilha Grande Hike is the 2 hour trail to Praia Lopes Mendes, regularly mentioned as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. The hike over the headlands to Lopes Mendes takes you through virgin Atlantic Rainforest, with howler monkeys, black-tufted marmoset and porcupines amongst the possibilities for wildlife encounters, as well as the island snakes. You pass smaller beaches such as Palmas en route before crossing the isthmus at the eastern end of the island and cross through to Lopes Mendes on the quiet, wild Atlantic side. You can catch the taxi boat back to Abraao from Palmas if you prefer longer on the beach. Day 9 : Parrot's Peak Hike Ilha Grande Your second Ilha Grande hike takes you up Pico do Papagaio (Parrot\'s Peak), the second highest mountain on the island. The trail takes you out of the village in the direction of Dois Rios. Before the top of the trail, you turn up to the right and walk amongst Atlantic Rainforest roots and bamboo groves for around 4 hours. The final part is a steeper scramble up the neck of the parrot, before you finally emerge on the rocky head with stunning panoramic views of the Costa Verde, Restinga da Marambaia, even all the way up to Rio on a clear day. Vila do Abraao is also there beneath you. You will have earned the rest to appreciate the magnificent view! Day 10 : Secluded Trails & Remote Beaches Ilha Grande Lopes Mendes is certainly not the only stunning beach on Ilha Grande, with Dois Rios, Aventureiro and Parnaoica all featuring on postcards. Reaching many of these beaches may require some effort, either by boat or by trails crossing the mountains of the interior. The reward is to spend the day almost alone on a beautiful Brazilian beach, a stretch of tropical paradise to yourselves. Be careful not to return too late - the jungle becomes very dark at sunset. Alternatively, you could take a boat trip around Ilha Grande, making snorkelling stops at tropical lagoons. Mountain-biking and scuba diving trips around the island can also be included. Day 11 : Leaving Ilha Grande Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro & Away Perhaps the most difficult part of your stay on Ilha Grande will be leaving the island! The relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful scenery of mountains, jungle, beaches and warm seas, the wildlife on land and in the sea leave most people vowing to return. You leave the island on the morning boat and continue your journey back up the Costa Verde to Rio de Janeiro, arriving in good time for your international flight home. This adventurous trip around Rio de Janeiro and the Costa Verde can also be combined with any of our other wonderful Brazil Adventures, and also extended to include some of the longer distance hiking and kayaking ideas.
