The Amazon Clipper Cruise

The Amazon Clipper Cruise is a wonderful shorter Amazon cruise, with two levels of boat - the Premium and Traditional types - along with three possible lengths, being the 2 night Rio Solimoes or 3 night Rio Negro cruises, or the 5 night combination of both tributaries of the Amazon River. This 5 night cruise takes you out of Manaus on Monday to travel up the Rio Solimoes to the Xiborena region of rubber trees and giant water lilies. Canoe trips on Lake Janauaca and the Lake Januario Ecological Park bring you closer to flocks of egrets and cormorants, with piranha fishing and night safaris. The second half of the cruise travels up the Rio Negro to the Anavilhanas Archipelago and Novo Airao, where the Amazon River Dolphins like to stay. The Amazon Clipper cruises depart from Manaus most weeks, on Monday and Wednesday. The boats are in the traditional low-berth Amazon style, allowing passage through shallow waters and giving close access to jungle and wildlife. The fleet consists of the three-deck Traditional  with 8 air-conditioned cabins with bunk beds, all on the outside of the boat. The four-deck Premium boats have 16 air-conditioned cabins with lower beds, again all facing the river and the rainforest. Both have covered outdoor viewing areas and comfortable common areas.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Over The Amazon Jungle to Manaus Manaus Sunday. Your flight takes you over the huge green expanse of jungle and you arrive in Manaus, the city at the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. After transferring to your hotel, the rest of the day is free to relax and recover from your journey. You can enjoy your first taste of Amazon Cuisine, which makes use of the fruits and vegetables of the area, and also the abundant fish life in the Amazon River system. In the evening you may even get the opportunity to see a performance at the famous Manaus Opera House, the Teatro Amazonas. Day 2 : Manaus Sights & Embarkation! Manaus to Janauaca Lake Monday. A morning tour takes in the famous Manaus Theatre, the Municipal Market, and the Floating Dock. The theatre is the symbol of the city and was built during the rubber boom that made the wealth of Manaus. The market on the edge of the river boasts produce and crafts from all over the Amazon area. The Amazon Clipper Cruise embarks at 2:30pm, passing Manaus and up the Rio Solimoes to the Xiborena region. Canoe trips in smaller creeks take you to see life on the flood plains and, after sunset, to observe nocturnal creatures including caimans. The cruise continues up to Janauaca Lake with dinner on the way. Day 3 : Amazon Wildlife Rio Solimoes Tuesday. Early morning canoe trip takes you bird watching with good chances of seeing Hoatzins and large flocks of Egrets and Cormorants. After breakfast, you visit the inhabitants of the lake who survive on manioc plantations, fishing, diverse fruit trees, rubber, Brazil nut trees, wood and other products of native plants. A trek in the forest with a local nature expert precedes lunch. In the afternoon you can fish for the legendary piranha and other types of fish. A night canoe trip to see nocturnal animals, including nighthawks, snakes, toro-rats, sloths and frogs. Day 4 : Amazon Bird-Watching Manaus to Rio Pagodao Wednesday. Early morning bird-watching trip in the January Ecological Park and nearby waterways before breakfast at the Meeting of Waters. The cruise returns to the Tropical Hotel at 11.30am, with a few hours to wait while other passengers board for the second half of the cruise, the Rio Negro section. The Amazon Clipper Cruise first heads up the Rio Pagodao, a tributary of the Rio Negro. A sunset canoe trip gives you the chance to observe the nocturnal animals, and come up close to the caiman - the largest reptile of South America. Day 5 : Lakes & Lilies Anavilhanas Archipelago Thursday. The smaller canoes take you for off-boat excursions with a local wildlife specialist to observe the flora and fauna of the Amazon Jungle, including the giant Victoria Regina Water Lilies. You will also visit a local community to learn about the way of life of the people who make their homes on the edge of the world's largest river system. An afternoon trip takes you through the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the largest freshwater archipelago in the world. A night-time safari takes you to spot creatures such as the sloth, snakes and frogs as well as the caimans. Day 6 : Dolphin Encounters Novo Airao to Lake Acajatuba Friday. A visit to Novo Airao takes you to see the local market and the timber yards where the Amazon River boats are built. You also get the chance to see the Amazon River Dolphins up close, as Novo Airao is the best area to find these friendly creatures. They come in three different shades - grey, grey and pink and also completely pink. A trip to Praia Grande allows you to enjoy the wonders of a white sand beach some 1500km from the ocean! If water levels permit, you can also swim in the Amazon River. A canoe trip to Acajatuba Lake follows, with fishing for the legendary piranha as well. Day 7 : Meeting of the Waters Meeting of the Waters to Manaus & Away Saturday. A dawn canoe trip allows you to experience this at Lago de Janeiro, and also to see the Giant Lillies - supposedly large enough to support a small child, although perhaps not wise to try. The cruise stops at the Meeting of the Waters on the journey back to Manaus. This bizarre natural phenomenon occurs where the two main arteries of the Amazon, the Negro and the Solimoes, meet but don't mix for 10km. After returning to the Tropical Hotel at 11.30am, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home or onwards to another of our fantastic destinations in Brazil.
