Enjoy the vibrant Johannesburg sights!

Johannesburg is sub-Saharan Africa's largest city. It is a cosmopolitan and fast-paced urban centre with a vast amount of attractions and activities on offer for any visitor, as well as modern glitzy shopping malls and first-class restaurants. Choose from city and Soweto Township tours or delve into the history of mankind at the Cradle of Mankind at Maropeng.

An extra day is available for this tour to include both activities - contact Acacia or your agent for more information.

Choose from the two options below to explore today:

The Johannesburg Soweto & Apartheid Museum Tour is a great introduction to the second largest city in Africa, taking a look at the capital’s towering buildings and fascinating history. Head out with a local tour guide – born and raised in Soweto, who will share their experience of this vibrant city within a city. See the famed Hector Pieterson Museum, the Regina Mundi Church, Vilikazi Street and Freedom Square.

See the world famous Apartheid Museum to learn about South Africa’s turbulent past, and how the country has grown from its segregated lifestyle to a mix of cultures and vibrant lifestyles today. Then it’s off to Soweto, a huge township area which began growing to accommodate its now 3-5million inhabitants during the apartheid era. We’ll visit a shanty town, a local shabeen (pub) and maybe be invited to see inside a home in the area. The trip stops at Freedom Square, the Hector Petersen Museum and Barragwanath Hospital, the largest in the world. Finally, we stop to see Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu’s houses; two men who were integral in shaping the modern South Africa.

The Cradle of Humankind tour - The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is one of eight South African World Heritage Sites. It is the world's richest hominid site, home to around 40% of the world's human ancestor fossils. The 53 000ha area is also home to a diversity of birds, animals and plants, some of which are rare or endangered. We start this fun-filled full day tour at the Maropeng Visitors Centre where we read up on the facts about the evolution of the world and especially humankind. Next we view the fossils, learn how humankind evolved, view stone tools up to 1-million years old, take a ride through the ‘ice age’ or check out the cool souvenirs on offer. Our last stop is the visitors centre of the Sterkfontein Caves, where a permanent hominid exhibition is displayed. Palaeontologists and archaeologists consider this to be one of the top archaeological sites in the world. A tour into the caves is included. 1 images Johannesburg City 2 images Maropeng, Cradle of Mankind 3 images Saba Lodge, Johannesburg
