Highlights of walking in Hwange

Staying at an exclusive, intimate seasonal bush camp on the banks of the Lukosi River. The traditional walk-in tents have ensuite bush bathrooms and proper beds. With camp staff on hand to do the chores cooking and laundry you’re free to relax.

  • Leon Varley has been running safaris since the early 1980s. It goes without saying that he’s one of the most experienced guide in the business.
  • walk through the wilderness areas of Hwange National Park
  • elephants and other wildlife congregate around the waterholes just below Vikani camp, your base during your stay.
  • follow a Matabele Tracker on a spoor of a lion or black rhino
  • Wildlife includes giraffe, large elephant herds, zebra, lion
  • stay in exclusive seasonal bush camps on all inclusive basis. Walk in tents are comfortable with mattress beds and ensuites with showers and toilets.
  • walks start and end at the camp, returning during the heat of the day for lunch and siesta.
  • meals will be served under a canvas canopy and all meals are prepared and by the camp crew and cook.

This has to be the most exciting  way to explore Hwange’s wilderness and wildlife. An area which is famed for it large populations of elephant and lion.

Best time to walk with Leon Varley

  • June to September – warm dry and sunny with cooler nights. These are the winter months
  • November to March – sunny and hot, expect short bursts of heavy rain during the afternoon

General fitness…  you should be able to cover a distance of 15-20 kms a day, split between two or three walks. Walks take place when it’s cooler, in the early morning and late afternoon.

Itinerary

Day 1 - arrive Victoria Falls for Hwange You're met on arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport [VFA] for the drive deep into Hwange park. Game viewing enroute to Vikani camp by the Lukosi river. Walking begins after lunch.
Days 2 and 3 - walking in Hwange Walking following tracks, spoors of lion and rhino. Setting off early and returning for lunch and siesta. Afternoon drive to mineral licks, walking, game viewing and tracking. Back to camp at sunset.
Day 4 - Depart late afternoon Early walk tracking wildlife returning to the camp for lunch. Bid farewell to the camp and take a slow drive back through the park and on to Victoria Falls International Airport [VFA]
