Itinerary

Itinerary 1: At the Rim of the West Coast – Snowmobile to Isfjord Radio Day 1: UK – Longyearbyen
Fly to Longyearbyen via Oslo. Spend the night at Basecamp Hotel in the centre of Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. With just over 2,000 inhabitants, it is surprisingly lively with excellent shopping and dining options. You'll find many opportunities to buy local arts and crafts – gold and silver items (often inspired by the polar bear, walrus or reindeer) are the most popular. Being a tax-free area, goods here are generally better value than on the mainland. Overnight Basecamp Hotel.

Day 2: Snowmobile to Isfjord Radio
At 10:00, meet your guide in the reception of Basecamp Hotel for a short briefing on winter clothing, snowmobiling and your program for the next few days. You will be provided with an all-in-one polar suit and winter boots, before heading outside to the snowmobiles for a safety briefing and instructions on how to drive them. Leaving Longyearbyen behind, you’ll then set off into the wilderness towards Kapp Linne, a dramatic cape on the west coast of Spitsbergen and the location of Isfjord Radio. Surrounded by magnificent Arctic landscapes, you will stop enroute for an expedition lunch, a great opportunity for taking photographs and appreciating the intense silence. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, your guide will choose your route to Isfjord Radio. Before evening falls, you will arrive at the remote boutique hotel, a final outpost before Greenland and the North Pole. After welcome drinks, you will be served a delicious three-course meal before having some free time to explore the area or take a quick dip in the Arctic Ocean followed by a sauna. Overnight Isfjord Radio.

Day 3: Snowmobile to Fritjof Glacier
After breakfast, head out on snowmobiles into the stunning wilderness of Spitsbergen. If the weather is good, your guide will lead you south to Fritjof Glacier. With luck, you might spot the King of the Arctic, a polar bear hunting for seals across the pack ice. You will be served an expedition lunch during your day exploring the glacier. Return to Isfjord Radio, where you will have time to relax before dinner. Overnight Isfjord Radio.

Day 4: Snowmobile to Barentsburg and Longyearbyen
Following breakfast, prepare to leave Isfjord Radio to snowmobile to the coal mining town of Barentsburg – a Russian relic that now sustains a dwindling population of just 500 resilient inhabitants. Exploring on foot, you’ll get a vivid insight into the life of this isolated Arctic town. Many buildings are uninhabited, but the mine is still operational. Continue by snowmobile to Longyearbyen. Overnight Basecamp Hotel.

Day 5: Depart Longyearbyen
Transfer to the airport (not included) for your flight home.

Itinerary 2: True Arctic Story – Snowmobile to Nordenskiold Day 1: UK – Longyearbyen

Day 2: Snowmobile to Nordenskiold Lodge
At 10:00, meet your guide in the reception of Basecamp Hotel for a short briefing on winter clothing, snowmobiling and your program for the next few days. You will be provided with an all-in-one polar suit and winter boots, before heading outside to the snowmobiles for a safety briefing and instructions on how to drive them. Leaving Longyearbyen behind, you’ll then set off into the wilderness, driving through valleys and across ice-locked fjords towards Billefjorden and Nordenskiold Lodge. Your route will depend on weather and snow conditions. Surrounded by magnificent Arctic landscapes, you will stop enroute for an expedition lunch, a great opportunity for taking photographs and appreciating the intense silence. On arrival at the lodge you will have time to settle in and enjoy stunning views of Nordenskiold Glacier. Enjoy dinner and a sauna. Overnight Nordenskiold Lodge.

Day 3: Snowmobile to Pyramiden
After breakfast, head out on snowmobiles into the stunning wilderness of Spitsbergen. If the weather is good, your guide will lead you to the deserted Russian mining town of Pyramiden, abandoned in 1998 but once a thriving community with houses, schools and the world’s northernmost swimming pool! The Russians took nothing with them when they left. Walking around the ghost town, you’ll find everything from rusted playgrounds to dusty pianos – almost as if they are waiting for the residents to return. You will be served an expedition lunch while out on the snowmobiles. Return to Nordenskiold Lodge, where you will have time to relax before dinner. Overnight Nordenskiold Lodge.

Day 4: Snowmobile to Longyearbyen
Following breakfast, it’s time to get back on the snowmobiles and head back to civilization. Enjoy one last lunch in the wilderness before returning to Longyearbyen.

Day 5: Depart Longyearbyen
Transfer to the airport (not included) for your flight home.
