Visit the pioneering art communities of Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Pangnirtung and the capital of Nunavut—Iqaluit—with art expert Carol Heppenstall.
Over the years, we have built a great bond with the families in South Baffin. This remarkable adventure provides great insight into natural history, culture, and artworks and their makers.
In Iqaluit we will explore the legislature, art and history museums, and the cathedral.
In Pangnirtung, we will travel the fjord to view the Penny Ice Cap. We’ll learn about whaling history, and visit weavers and print makers.
In Kinngait we’ll visit the Mallikjuaq Thule ruins, and the spectacular facilities of print shop. Meet with artists, trying your hand at printmaking, and share stories over tea and bannock!
Our group will overnight in Ottawa. Those arriving early enough may join our guide,
Carol Heppenstall, on a museum tour.
We’ll enjoy an orientation dinner together as a group before retiring.
A morning flight via Iqaluit brings us to Kinngait (Cape Dorset), a community that has long been known as the art capital of the north.
Our community programming will include a visit to the print studio and artists’ gallery. A walk on the tundra searching for berries, flowers, and birds may reveal some ancient Thule sites as well. An evening program with artists and elders is always a highlight.
Iqaluit is the capital of Nunavut and our rendezvous point for flights to other communities. Our first visit will be to the legislative building with a tour of chambers and the gallery of fine arts which surrounds the government offices.
Local galleries offer a wide selection of sculpture. A great bookshop offers every imaginable publication of northern interest.
A morning flight from Iqaluit brings us to Pangnirtung, a beautiful community on the Cumberland Sound. We will visit the Uqqurmiut Centre, featuring a print shop and tapestry studio. We’ll enjoy demonstrations in both studios and an opportunity to buy beautiful, handmade items.
A boat ride into Aujuittuq Park is always a favourite, as we pass glaciers and grassy slopes rich with flora and fauna. The dioramas at the Parks Office and Angmarlik Centre are a must-see.
Today we fly from Pangnirtung to Ottawa, arriving in the early evening for onward flights.
