Check shark cage diving off your bucket list of dream adventures with this full-day Great White Shark Tour to Dyer Island off Gansbaai, starting and ending in Cape Town. The top shark cage diving destination in South Africa, Gansbaai is one of the five best places in the world to dive with great white sharks.
In the morning you are collected in Cape Town and transferred to the Kleinbaai harbour in Gansbaai. Here a continental breakfast is served during the activity briefing. A short boat trip then takes you to Dyer Island, where the custom-built catamaran is anchored for your shark dive.
When the time arrives, you climb into the secure cage kitted out in a wetsuit and snorkelling gear.
Watching a massive great white glide towards you underwater gets adrenaline levels soaring high! If you're lucky, the great white sharks swim right past you, coming within a few feet of the cage.
While on the boat between dives you can watch these apex predators of the ocean from the viewing decks of the boat. At least two of the Marine Big Five (sharks, dolphins, whales, seals and penguins) are usually sighted too, as well as various bird species.
After your thrilling shark dive, we return to the warmth of the great white centre where you are debriefed over a hot bowl of soup and bread. You also have the option of visiting the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai on this day trip.
Later you are transferred back to Cape Town, having experienced the thrilling adventure of diving with the great white sharks off the Southern Coast of Africa.
Once at Dyer Island we usually anchor for about two hours. The exact duration depends on local conditions, shark activity on the day and the number of people diving.
The stainless steel cage is lowered into the water from the boat to a depth of about a metre below the surface. This safe state-of-the-art shark diving cage is secured to the boat. Once anchored, it is time to prepare for your dive by putting on the mask, booties, wetsuit and weight belt provided.
Then, you are lowered into the water inside the cage one at a time.
You are almost guaranteed to see a great white shark on this dive as this trip has a 99% success rate for seeing sharks, throughout the year.
The shark diving cage is covered with two lids, providing a safe place from which to view the sharks underwater. When the sharks come close to the cage you can submerge yourself underwater to watch them. You decide when to take your head underwater and for how long. Above the surface, the guides will shout out when they see a shark approaching.
When you're not diving you can relax on the boat and watch the sharks from the upper deck, providing excellent views and photo opportunities. Snacks and drinks will also be served (bread rolls, chips, cold drinks and hot chocolate) on the boat.
After your thrilling shark encounter, we return to the harbour via Shark Alley (weather allowing). Shark Alley is famous for the abundance of sharks that come to prey on the massive colony of Cape Fur Seals at Geyser Rock (about 60000 seals).
