OverviewCombining easily with a stay at Victoria Falls, this 13-day tour has a simple aim: to showcase the superb Kafue National Park. One of Zambia’s largest conservation areas, Kafue is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in the country – elephant, buffalo, hippo plus all the big predators like lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog – and has a bird count of nearly 500 species, twice that of Britain. Yet it is also one of the least-visited reserves, giving you great game sightings and amazing panoramas with barely another vehicle – if any – in sight. Safari lovers, experienced travellers and keen wildlife photographers will relish have massive tracts of Kafue virtually all to themselves. And because they are not in constant contact with humans and vehicles, the animals of Kafue retain their ‘wild’ streak, giving you exceptional experiences.
The itinerary is an intuitive one, taking advantage of great accommodation in different ecosystems – savannah, riverside and wetland – to produce a stunning mix of biodiversity. And as well as enjoying the comfort of en suite accommodation at the established camps, there are also three nights ‘under canvas’ on a mobile safari to look forward to, giving you a chance to relive the golden days camping out in the wild with a hot-water bucket shower and dinner under the stars.
Operating in the June-October dry season for maximum comfort and reward, it is a wildlife-focused tour and will suit photographers, repeat safari-goers and nature lovers as well as discerning travellers and adventurous honeymooners. The accommodation, standard of service and cuisine are excellent and the guides are some of the best in the business.

Day to dayItineraryarrowBack to MapDays 1-3: The Nanzhila PlainsKafue National Park, ZambiaDetailed breakdownDays 1-3: The Nanzhila Plains | 3 NightsUp arrowKafue National Park, ZambiaThe safari begins at Livingstone near Victoria Falls where a road transfer takes you north on a 3-hour drive to Kafue National Park. You are met at the park gate by the team from Nanzhila Plains Safari Camp and can sit back on a game drive to camp. Set overlooking a 'dambo' - a seasonal wetland - the camp is well located to give you your first taste of Kafue's splendid wildlife. There are often elephants drinking and feeding at the dambo and the air around camp rings with the calls of birds. Your hosts are also the owners and you enjoy excellent hospitality and great guiding on your drives and walks.
Day 4-6: On the banks of the river | 3 NightsUp arrowZambiaLeaving camp after breakfast, you enjoy game viewing and unspoilt scenery all the way to the banks of Lake Itezhi-tezhi where you enjoy a picnic before transferring to nearby Kaingu Safari Lodge set on the banks of the Kafue River. Hippo snort and splash below you as you settle into your safari suite, a beautiful tented suite mounted on a wooden deck with views over the river. There are game drives here too but Kaingu emphasises the river experience: this is your chance to hit the water on motor-boat and canoe trips to experience a different aspect to Kafue's ecology.
Day 7-9: Mobile in Busanga | 3 NightsUp arrowZambiaMoving north, you enter the Kafue's most famous region: the Busanga Plains. A vast, sprawling wetland, Busanga is home to thousands of antelope - impala, lechwe and puku especially - and their ever-attendant predators as well as spectacular birdlife and a host of heavyweights like elephants, buffalo and giraffe. Your accommodation is a mobile tented camp, lit by lanterns and staffed by a senior guide, chef and camp hand. Your dome tent sleeps two comfortably in stretcher beds and the camp has a simple but effective hot-water bucket shower and 'sit-down' toilet. Game drives take you into the heart of the action, not forgetting of course to be in time for one of Busanga's famous pink sunrises.
Days 10-12: Enjoy a ‘slow safari’ | 3 NightsUp arrowKafue National Park, ZambiaDriving south and then east you reach Kafue River Camp, home of the 'slow safari' and the perfect place to relax and unwind after the excitement of 'going mobile' in Busanga. You have a spacious suite with two queen beds, a fireplace, a free-standing bathtub, an outdoor shower and a wooden deck overlooking the river. Solar power provides the lighting plus convenient battery-recharging opportunities. Kafue River Camp offers game drives in a variety of habitats for a diverse mix of wildlife and you can also go on safari walks, canoe trips and even mountain biking adventures - truly something for everyone.
