Seasonal mid-year Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara
OverviewA night Nairobi hotel begins this safari: it looks out over the thorn trees of Nairobi National Park and you spend time at a giraffe centre and elephant sanctuary, setting the scene nicely for the week ahead on safari. Enjoying the convenience of fly-in logistics, you divide your time between two very different regions of Kenya – the Laikipia Plateau and the Masai Mara – which between them showcase the best of the country’s wildlife and scenery.
Laikipia lies in a beautiful Rift Valley landscape and is a bastion of Kenyan conservation; its privately-run reserves are home to the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The Masai Mara is most famous for the mid-year Migration, when nearly two million wildebeest and zebra move through the area, providing an unforgettable feast of nature. It is a time of big cats on the hunt and crocodiles lunging from muddy waters. Such is the scale of the Mara’s wildlife, however, that it remains a stellar game viewing destination throughout the year.
You have the advantage of staying in private concessions, heading out on morning and afternoon game drives for exclusive game sightings. There is also time to absorb local Maasai culture through personal interactions and visits to their schools and communities. There are opportunities to go on fascinating walks with expert guides and visit a chimpanzee sanctuary as well as optional activities such as hot-air balloon safaris and spot-lit night drives. Wonderful Out of Africa scenery dominates the week, and with accommodation offered in large, family-size tents with crisply made beds and en suite bathrooms, you have everything you need for comfort and relaxation at the end of the day.
