The Dolomites are amongst Europe’s greatest sights with jagged peaks aplenty and beautiful valleys throughout the area. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a photographer’s dream with changeable weather offering dramatic light, great shapes and textures to play with and explore.
For this photography tour, we will primarily be based in Alta Badia otherwise known as the “heart of the Dolomites” so we can explore various areas of this dramatic landscape. This early Summer period features flowers bursting into the meadows and the area is relatively quiet before the Summer rush.
We’re delighted to be offering photography trips to the Dolomites again and with Sam you have a guide who has travelled there extensively over the last 10 years.
Even from the very first moment of this tour the views will be breath-taking. The 2-hour drive from Innsbruck down into Italy and the Dolomites is a great way to whet the photographic appetite. Our base in Alta Badia offers an excellent starting point for various forays into this dramatic landscape. On our doorstep are great views of the Gruppo Sella range with the early summer flowers starting to appear in the meadows and waterfalls carved into the rock. The mighty Sassongher mountain is also just a few moments away and beautifully demonstrates the majesty of this region.
During the Dolomites photography tour we will be exploring various high mountain passes which offer sweeping vistas into the valleys and also up-close views of these impressive peaks. In this early Summer period the weather can still be a little changeable which is ideal for capturing some of the spirit of this area. The mountain roads wind around the Gruppo Sella and offer various views from differing aspects and depending on the weather you can expect everything from shards of light to dense moody mist and everything in-between.
After a few days exploring Alta Badia and its surrounding areas including rivers, lakes and alpine meadows, we’ll venture to the picturesque Alpe di Siusi, which is Europe’s largest mountain plateau. This sublime area offers wonderful views of the Sasso Lungo, Sasso Piatto and Sciliar peaks. This area is off-limits to public cars and as such we’ll be spending our penultimate day and final night here to get plenty of chance to explore on foot and with the provided local bus service.
During the tour we will also make time for some image reviews and post-processing discussions at our hotel base to help you not only on the trip but into the future. Summer sunrises are pretty early and so we will try to mix up the hours to cover some early and late sessions as well as plenty of daytime shooting opportunities. We will be primarily getting around with our own vehicle but there will be some walking involved due to the nature of the landscape. A reasonable level of general fitness would be required with the ability to walk short-medium distances over a light-moderate gradient.
