Situated in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and covering an area of about 120km, Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is fast emerging as a popular weekend getaway from Mumbai and Pune. Home to the endangered giant squirrels, this wildlife protected are boasts of rich flora and fauna and offers spectacular views of its lush green forests and the Sahyadri mountain range that surrounds the sanctuary.
The place is yet to be fully discovered by the tourists and therefore still exudes a serene and rustic charm. Bhimashankar also attracts pilgrims and devotees to the sacred Jyotiralinga Temple located amidst the wilderness. Its nature trail is an easy short trek near Pune where you can soak in the natural wild beauty of the forest.
Your journey for Bhimashankar trek in Maharashtra starts from Pune after your assembling near the Fergusson College main gate by around 06:00AM. Private buses will be arranged for you and it is best to start early so that you can reach Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary before noon. As you meet and greet the other tourists, enjoy breakfast on the way and slowly build up your excitement to explore a new place.
Your first stop is the Bhimshankar Temple, which also known as the Jyotiralinga temple. It is one of the 12 jyotiralinga shrines in India and attracts pilgrims from all over the country. Surrounded by the Sahyadri Mountain, the temple is a spiritual bliss because you can breathe in fresh air around you and experience the rich natural treasures of the sanctuary even as you pay homage to Lord Shiva.
Along with the other visitors you will start your Bhimashankar trekking trail from the Bhimashankar temple. The expert guides who are well versed with the area will make your walk even more interesting with anecdotes and historical accounts and they will help you spot giant squirrel also known as ‘Shekaroo’ that are rare and found only in some parts. As you meander through the pristine jungle, streams and meadows you will forget all your worries and become one with the surroundings. Carry your binoculars as there are no dearth of rare birds and animals in the area.
You can stop by wildflowers or catch a glimpse of a rare butterfly fluttering by. This green oasis away from your busy city life will replenish your senses. The lunch break will be around 02:00PM. Post lunch, you will commence on the walk and take a quick jungle tour before you reach the bus by around 04:30PM.
It is not safe to stay in the forests after dark and you will start from Bhimshankar at around 05:30 in the evening so that you can reach Pune by 09:30PM.

If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.
If cancellations are made within 0-30 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.
In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However no refund will be provided for the same.
The applicable refund amount will be processed within 10 business days
The customer receives a confirmation voucher via email within 24 hours of successful booking
In case the preferred slots are unavailable, an alternate schedule of the customer’s preference will be arranged and a new confirmation voucher will be sent via email.
Alternatively, the customer may choose to cancel their booking and a full refund will be processed.
