This amazing adventure trekking through the forests of the Ilha Grande of Brazil, then paddling the crystal clear waters of Paraty could well be taken directly from the pages of Peter Fleming or Willard Price. The scenery is breathtaking, the oceans mesmerising and will be an experience that will not be forgotten in a hurry. Ilha Grande has an amazing history and has been, at different times a pirate’s lair, a leper colony and finally a prison for Brazil’s most unsavoury criminals. This juicy and sordid history has kept developers at bay leaving the pristine beaches and virgin forest found today. It´s considered the second wonder of Brazil after Rio de Janeiro and an Environmental Protection Area, responsible for the protection of endangered animals and plants and the vast Atlantic forest. Paraty is a beautiful colonial city, a World Heritage Site, it’s natural and architectural charm preserved to this day. To walk through the Historic Center of Paraty is like going back in time to another era. The construction of its houses and churches reflect a period style and the mysterious symbols in the masonry which decorate its walls feed the imagination with tales of old. In the eighteenth century it was an important port through which gold and precious stones of Minas Gerais were shipped to Portugal. However the constant pirate’s assaults, who took refuge on nearby beaches, changed the gold route leading the city to a great economic isolation.

Depart London Heathrow
Arrive Rio De Janeiro, transfer to hotel
Arrive in Rio and transfer to the hotel. Have free time to relax and prepare for the start of the trekking in the following morning. Welcome dinner. Overnight at the hotel.
Rio De Janeiro - Ilha Grande
After breakfast, we are transferred early to the Conceição do Jacareí pier and travel by boat to Abraão Village (30min). There we meet our local guide and get booted up. We trek from Abraão village to Saco do Céu passing by Feiticeira falls and beach. Saco do Ceu (meaning Sky Bay) is a small bay with still waters that is named because at night you can see the reflection of the stars on the oceans´ surface. Our lunch stop will be at a small fishing village and a natural saltwater marsh that harbours many species of marine life. After lunch we walk to the Freguesia de Santana church, (built in 1796). This location was the first place in Ilha Grande to be populated and essential for the economical development of the island. Today, it is an important historical location. From there we visit the Lagoa Azul point (Blue Lagoon), where we find colorful coral and fish. Dinner and overnight at Enseada do Bananal.
Beach to Araçatiba Village
After breakfast we walk form Bananal to Longa beach. Continuing by boat we visit the shallow, transparent and calm waters of Lagoa Verde (Green Lagoon) for lunch. It is one of the only locations in Brazil that has green coral at the bottom of the ocean, with many fish and starfish. Lagoa Verde is a perfect place for swimming and snorkeling. Have dinner and overnight at Araçatiba village.
Trekking to Gruta do Acaiá, boat to Paraty
It’s about a three hour trek to the Gruta do Acaiá (an ocean cave) located in the south of the Ilha Grande State Park, between the bay and the open sea. We walk through a dramatic tunnel towards the bottom of the sea cave, located 5 meters below sea level. Inside, we witness a spectacle of color and lighting, the sunlight reaches the dark cave filtered through the ocean waters, creating a beautiful lake of blue light. We have lunch there before walking to Praia Vermelha, where we board a boat that will take us all the way to Paraty (Approx 4h). On arrival at Paraty we have short trek to the pousada (Guesthouse) for dinner and overnight.
Kayaking the Bay of Paraty and the Costa Verde
We start with a briefing on the kayak section, and then paddle the beaches and islands of the protected bay. We also call in at the privately owned Mantimento Island where, with a bit of good fortune, we get to see the endangered Golden Lion Tamarins. This is some of the finest scenery the Green Coast (Costa Verde) has to offer with plenty of opportunity for swimming and admiring the spectacular views. We finish up in Brazil’s only Tropical Fjord, the Saco do Mamangua, which is only accessible by trail or sea. Overnight accommodation in Mamanguá campsite.
Marine Life Sanctuary
The Mamanguá Sugarloaf Mountain (440m peak) provides a stunning backdrop to our beach campsite. We climb the peak in the morning for incredible views of the whole region. The tropical fjord, with its protected waters and mangrove, is a natural sanctuary for marine life with over 100 species of fish. After lunch on the beach we paddle to the mangrove at the back of the bay and see at firsthand how the three ecosystems in the fjord support marine life. Overnight accommodation in Mamanguá campsite.
Mamanguá Bay to Paraty
Our Green Coast Sea Kayaking adventure passes through Little Paraty, or Paraty Mirim, as it is known in the local Tupi Indian language. This was the disembarkation point for slaves being transported from the west coast of Africa in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Then we finish our kayaking expedition, back in Paraty.
Paraty - Rio De Janeiro
Have breakfast and depart for a cultural walking tour. Beautiful colonial architecture, street design ahead of its time, exiled Portuguese royalty and the dark past of the slave trade – these are just some of the ingredients that make up Paraty’s rich and colourful history from the past to the present day. After that, we move on to Rio de Janeiro with a fun dinner to celebrate our achievements.
Rio De Janeiro
After breakfast we visit Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain by Tijuca Forest before being taken to the airport for the flight home.
