North of Kagbeni, known as upper Mustang looks similar to the Tibetan plateau with its yellow and gray rolling hills that have been eroded by high winds. It lies beyond the Annapurna massif and bordered on three sides by Tibet. Upper Mustang is the last of the untouched lands in the Himalayas, and here you will find Lo-Manathang, the only walled city in Nepal and the capital of Mustang. Its name translates from the Tibetan as “plains of aspiration” and has its own King so is a kingdom within a country! The area is inhabited by Loba people and only opened to tourists in 1992. It is still a restricted area and the amount of trekkers permitted into the area is controlled as to preserve the natural beauty and charm of the region.
The trek delivers some breathtaking scenery whilst camping under the stars amidst the beauty of the Himalayas. The local people are of Tibetan descent and honor the traditions and customs of their ancestors. Their lifestyle is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the modern world; they herd yaks, farm their own food and trade with goods with Tibet. This trip is truly a step back in time and a terrific chance for you to relax, forget your stresses and enjoy a serene environment.
