Namibia Birding and Photography Guide

An accomplished and experienced Namibia birding and photographic guide, Toni holds a Namibia Academy for Tourism and Hospitality Level 3 qualification (the highest level attainable in Namibia) and is widely renowned for her extensive knowledge of the cultures, ornithology, flora, astronomy and wildlife of the country.

In 1981 Toni moved to Namibia with her family and from then on her love of the outdoors and all things nature grew and grew. Her father was an exploration geologist who travelled extensively around Southern Africa, living in small mining towns and managing bush camps where Toni would spend her school holidays camping in the bush, or visiting private farms and reserves. Toni’s father passed on to her his unparalleled knowledge of all things Namibia, and she carried this with her as she became a manager and guide at some of the most remote lodges in the extreme North West of Namibia. Toni has travelled expansively across Namibia and its neighbouring countries, making regular visits to all of the National Game Reserves and developing her photographic skills which she takes great pleasure in passing on to visitors to the region.

Her deep love and knowledge of the Namibia, coupled with her infectious passion and enthusiasm to want to share it, make her one of the country’s top guides and ambassadors for this beautiful country. More than just a guide who simply points from a vehicle, Toni becomes fully involved in the experiences of her fellow travellers and places a great emphasis on finding the best adventures, wildlife encounters and photo opportunities for her tour groups. As a Managing Tour Consultant she plans safaris for a wide range of interest groups but her main focus is on birding and photographic small group tours, where she delights in each visitor gaining an up-close and personal experience of all that the country she loves and knows so well has to offer.

Born in Chartres in the West Falklands, Jenny grew up on the family farm where her love for animals was nurtured by the25,000 sheep, horses and cows that lived alongside her. Forever a nature, conservation and wildlife enthusiast Jenny has travelled extensively throughout the Falkland Islands, visiting each and every wildlife island at least once, and even travelling around some by yacht. She spent 11 years on Sea Lion Island as Manager of the Lodge, Warden of the Nature Reserve and as the principal tour provider, meaning her knowledge of Sea Lion Island in particular is second to none. Having spent so much time here, as expected her wildlife speciality is Elephant Seals, but she is also well versed in the ways of the seabirds, penguins, whales, dolphins and sea lions that call the Falklands their home.

After her time on Sea Lion Island Jenny moved to Stanley to work for the Falkland Islands Government and became manager of a local travel firm assisting with travel arrangements for incoming visitors, before taking semi-retirement to spend more time with her family and enjoy more time further exploring the lands she knows so well. Jenny is extremely passionate about sharing the hidden nature secrets of the Falklands with those who come to visit her homeland and will be looking forward to accompanying you and passing on her unsurpassed knowledge of the areas you will be visiting.

Buenos Aires

Arrive and transfer from airport to your city centre hotel. Take a three-hour walking tour with private guide of the historic and elegant Recoleta area of the city, including a visit to the famous cemetery, resting place of Eva Peron. The Colourful Boca District

Breakfast (included), followed by half day sightseeing tour, including the colourful Boca district. Eat tonight at a typical tango show and restaurant (included).

3Day

Iguazu Falls

Breakfast (included), then transfer to the domestic airport for flight to Iguazu Falls. Arrive and transfer to hotel. One of the most impressive series of falls, Iguazu straddle the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay and are best viewed from more than one side. You will have the opportunity to see them from above and below. Two Nights at The Sheraton Spa Resort, Iguazu Falls, bed & breakfast basis, Jungle view room.

4WD Truck Ride

Breakfast included. Walk to the main viewpoint over the Falls, then board and open 4WD truck for a ride through the rainforest to embark on a boat for a trip to the bottom of the falls themselves. Catwalks take you back to the hotel. Afternoon excursion to the Brazilian side for a different perspective.

5Day

Puerto Madryn

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flights via Buenos Aires to Trelew. Transfer to Puerto Madryn, Three Nights at Territorio Hotel, Puerto Madryn, bed & breakfast Standard Room.

6Day

Valdes Peninsula

Spend time exploring the Valdes Peninsula and Puerto Madryn area. Full day tour of the Peninsula included. Opportunity to take a boat trip out to the bay of Puerto Piramides where, depending on the time of year, southern right whales come to feed from  July/August to December.  Penguins nest between September and March and orca are around during the same period; they are particularly active in April. Birds, dolphins, sea lions and elephant seals can be seen all year round.

Puerto Madryn

Full day tour to see the large Magellenic penguin colony at Punta Tombo and the old Welsh settlement of Gaiman where you can sample a typical Welsh afternoon tea.

Ushuaia

After breakfast, transfer to Trelew for flight to Ushuaia. Arrive in Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego and transfer to hotel.

9Day

Lapataia National Park

After breakfast, picked up for a full day tour the Lapataia National Park, followed by a catamaran cruise along the Beagle Channel spotting seals and sealions plus seabirds such as petrels and shags. Try succulent Fuegan lamb cooked on an open grill for dinner.

10Day

Depart and set sail down the Beagle Channel

After breakfast, explore Ushuaia before boarding your MV Ortelius Antarctic expedition ship in the afternoon. Depart and set sail down the Beagle Channel looking for sea birds following the ship. A full brief and important safety lifeboat drill expertly given by the crew. 

11-12Days

At sea – Drake Passage

Cross the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Convergence. Spend time on deck watching wandering, grey-headed, black-browed and light-mantled sooty albatrosses along with various petrels and fulmars.

13-17Days

South Shetland Islands & Antarctic Peninsula

The programme within the South Shetlands and the Peninsula area is flexible and depends ice, sea and weather conditions. Plan to visit Cuverville Island, Neko Harbour, Port Lockroy, Paradise Bay and sail the spectacular Lemaire Channel. Lots of penguin, skua and shag colonies and many other birds plus several species of seals and whales. Also different national scientific research stations.

At Sea – Drake Passage

On our way north we are again followed by albatrosses, petrels and other seabirds whilst crossing the Drake Passage.

Disembark

Disembark after breakfast. Farewell to MV Ortelius. Morning transfer to Ushuaia Airport for flight to Buenos Aries and your independent return flight home
