Lima is the gateway to Peru and with some fascinating museums which provide the perfect introduction to the history the rest of the country. The historical centre of Lima was once reputed as one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America and is a fascinating place to explore. Day 2     Fly to Cuzco, tour the city and the surrounding Inca ruins. This beautiful colonial city was once the capital of the Inca Empire and is home to the Koricancha Temple, devoted to the worship of the sun. Cuzco provides a great base from which to explore the nearby attractions such as Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuaman, believed to be an ancient fortress, as well as other Inca sites which are found in the surrounding hills.Stay for three nights. Day 5     Travel to the Scared Valley and stay for one night. Once the spiritual and commercial heart of the Inca Empire, this winding valley is home to many ancient Inca citadels and remnants of a fortress at Ollantaytambo. These ruins provide an insight to Inca life five thousand years ago. Day 6     Take the train to Machu Picchu and tour the citadel. The ruins of Machu Picchu, believed to be an important ceremonial centre, were rediscovered in 1911. This ‘Lost City of the Incas’ is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. Stay for one night. Day 7     See the sunrise over the ruins and explore before taking the train back to Cuzco. Stay for one night in Cuzco. Day 8     Fly to Lima and onto Quito. Quito is 12,000 feet above sea level and set in an Andean valley overlooked by the Pichincha volcano. As the first city to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito is renowned for its historical centre, the largest and best preserved in all of the Americas. Stay for two nights. Day 10     Fly to the Galapagos and board your seven night cruise, enjoy daily wildlife viewing excursions. You don’t have to be an evolutionary biologist to appreciate one of the few places left on the planet where the evidence of human presence is kept to a minimum. The Islands of the Galapagos are a destination of contrasts, from the stark volcanic islands with immense lava fields to islands rich with vegetation and rimmed with sandy beaches. The diverse range of animals that live on these remote islands have no fear of mankind and it is clear to see why Charles Darwin was so fascinated with this area, it inspired him to write his theory of evolution. The fearlessness of the animals is one of the foremost attractions for visitors to the Islands, their relative lack of exposure to man and other predators enables visitors to get closer to the wildlife than is possible almost anywhere else in the world. It is important however to understand the fragility of the islands’ ecosystem, to maintain the pristine and unspoilt environment which makes the Galapagos so desirable. There are marked trails which must be followed and strict regulations which your guides and boat crews will enforce. Although the Galapagos can be visited all year round, the climate can be divided into two seasons – from January to June is the hot season, while the rest of the year is generally cloudier and cooler Day 17     Fly to Guayaquil for your final night. //
