This tour has it all! Come experience the magic on an adventure through this exciting corner of Africa.

This tour can combine with the option to trek the mountain gorillas

Day 1. Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Highlights. Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Our tour starts early on day one as we head from Dar es Salaam to the busy ferry port and make our way across the channel to Zanzibar.

Zanzibar was the base of the great 19th century explorers such as John Hanning Speke, Richard Burton and David Livingstone and once was a major trading centre of spices. Indeed the spice trade is centuries old: Zanzibaris have traded with the people of the Arabian peninsula for generations, plying the ocean in simple dhow sailboats relying on the annual trade winds for passage. The Arab influence is evident in the architecture and diverse street stall offerings of the capital, Stone Town.

This afternoon we have some free time to explore our new surroundings. Wind your way through the market alleyways marveling at the studded wooden doors and Arabic architecture or pick a spot with a view of the ocean and enjoy a delicious seafood treat or tasty cocktail. 7 images Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania 5 images Zanzibar, Tanzania

Day 2-4. Zanzibar Highlights. Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania.

We spend the next two days exploring the Island and it's many delights. Opt for a tour of the spice and fruit plantations en route to the north of the island where there is an opportunity to dive the colourful reefs or snorkel to see the diverse sea life. The beaches are welcoming with views out across the azure ocean and perfect for relaxing and enjoying a swim in the warm waters. 9 images Zanzibar, Northern Beaches, Tanzania

Day 5. Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam Highlights. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

After a last round of the colourful markets to ensure we have all the souvenirs we need, we make our way back across the channel to the mainland and our truck waiting for us at the beach camp.

Tonight we enjoy our last night near the ocean before taking the northern road to the base of Kilimanjaro. 5 images Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Day 6. Dar es Salaam to Marangu Highlights. Marangu, Moshi Area, Tanzania.

Leaving the busy city behind, we start to make our way to safari country. On our drive today we pass through the great flax plantations and as we near the towering Kilimanjaro we hope to see the icy tip.

Tonight we stop at Marangu camp at the foot of Kilimanjaro. The camp takes its name from the surrounding area. "Marangu" means "full of water" in the local Chagga language, and the lush green surroundings demonstrate the truth of this.

Day 7. Marangu to Arusha Highlights. Maasai Village Walk, Arusha, Tanzania. Meserani Snake Park, Tanzania.

Today we head to the safari capital - Arusha. Located at the half-way mark of the great Cairo to Cape Town trade route, Arusha soon became the base for safari goers in years gone by due to it's close proximity to so many great wilderness areas.

We continue to our camp outside Arusha at Meserani where we explore the local snake park to learn more about these fascinating reptiles. We may also explore the Maasai Museum to learn more about this fascinating culture. 3 images Maasai Village Walk, Arusha, Tanzania 2 images Meserani Snake Park, Tanzania

Day 8. Arusha to Serengeti National Park Highlights. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

Pack your bags and grab your gear - we're heading on safari today! We transfer over into the game viewing vehicles and meet our local guides who will take us on our Serengeti and Ngorongoro excursion over the next two days.

From Meserani we drive through Mto Wa Mbo and Karatu and then make our way up the outer Ngorongoro Crater wall before entering the Serengeti National Park.

It is here that we head out in search of the great herds, predators and open savanna plains that have drawn visitors here for generations. Seek out the migration or search for the solitary leopard lounging on the branches of an acacia tree before heading to the open camp within the park. 5 images Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Day 9. Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

We wake early to take advantage of the cool morning and head out to see which predators have been active while we slept. Enjoy the hues of the sunrise across the great Serengeti this morning.

On our return from the morning game drive we pack up and head back across the plains and to the Ngorongoro Crater rim where we will spend our next night. Our camp has fantastic views down into the base of the crater and we enjoy these this evening in preparation for our game viewing tomorrow.

Day 10. Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha Highlights. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

Another early morning greets us as we rise and prepare for our game drive in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ngorongoro Crater. We descend down the steep crater walls and spot the herds as we travel down. Once at the base, there is much to see with intense game viewing in store.

After our morning of excitement and thrills, we head back up the crater wall to our camp, and then on to our truck at Arusha where we enjoy a night at the camp bar, recounting the last day's adventures. 7 images Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Day 11. Arusha to Nairobi, Kenya

Our last morning packing up the truck before we head to the border of Kenya. Along the way we see Mount Meru on the outskirts of Arusha.

After border formalities we make our way to Kenya's Capital city Nairobi where our adventure ends on arrival.

Additional Info

This tour departs Dar es Salaam for Zanzibar early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and to acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings.

If time allows, we also suggest planning a night or two extra (after your tour) to make the most of this part of Africa. Accommodation is usually available locally on arrival but you can also pre-book this with Acacia. There is a variety of activities and excursions in the Nairobi area you can arrange locally or with your Tour Leader.

These are optional activities that are booked during your holiday and paid directly to the provider while on tour. These options offer a variety of experiences and allow you the freedom to decide what activities you would like to do.

We use 2-person dome tents with fly sheets, sewn-in groundsheets, zip-up insect screens and foam mattresses. We mainly use campsites, which usually have reasonable wash and shower facilities, electricity points and sometimes even a small shop, bar or swimming pool. The facilities on this tour may be more rustic than other destinations. On Zanzibar we use basic tourist class local hotels.

24-seater, self contained, custom-built safari truck with onboard tables, plug sockets, freezer, water tank, library, i-pod jack, safety features and 70 litre individual lockers, 4x4 safari vehicles, fast ferry.

In order to maximise the quality of game driving and to comply with local authority rulings, some of our National Park visits and game viewing is carried out using services provided by local African ground handlers. As well as enhancing our experience using local guides and smaller vehicles also allows us to contribute at a ‘grassroots’ level to local economies from which local people benefit.

This is a participation tour and your help will be needed in assisting with the various day to day duties, such as shopping, cooking and keeping the truck tidy (usually on a rota basis). But don’t worry it’s not all hard work and it’s a great way to meet the local people and get to know your fellow travellers. Your contribution benefits the success of the tour - most people find the greater their involvement, the greater their enjoyment of the whole trip.
